here sits a lady, cold closed and alone.

i followed some good advice - found a park. well, didn't "find," but returned to. more cooing pigeons. sharing my pita bread with sparrows. perhaps i will read, watch the people - continue to sit and enjoy the sunshine. (c'est tres jolie solei?) something like that. i am feeling more comme ci comme ca and less desole. absolutely butchering my french spelling.
my sunglasses are confused. they want to shade my eyes but the sun keeps disappearing. he's shy, hiding behind his cloud. so my sunglasses are having some deep feelings of inadequacy. they feel bad enough being cheap. at least they're international. danish. kopenhamn.

a french reflection
part one: the fountain. a grey square. barking dogs. screeching motorbikes, children asking for candy. there are many curious pigeons hoping for a bite, unfourtunately i haven't one to give. two old french women have just joined me on my sunshiney bench. they're smoking... always smoking. two packs in two days, and it aches. tired of black cigerettes, red wine, foreign languages.
part two: thoughts of home. if i could really be anywhere - would i choose to leave? i'd rather transport someone here i could talk to. in english, who would act like they gave a damn about what i had to say. laugh at my jokes. i used to make people laugh. and now i feel too conspicuous - self-conscious and uncomfortable. this confounded by all the absolute freaks i see around here. if i could have one thing... what would it be? i can't think of much. maybe to be home. dancing at a show. but even now in this context i know that could not be enjoyed. because its not the same - i'm not. i wonder if home is really like i've recently been told. you show up and its like everyone was put on pause when you left, and they're unpaused when you return. i have to keep... something. writing. thinking. or perhaps not. relaxing would be better, i'm too often consumed with thoughts. thinking can go either way. high or low. happy or sad - hard or soft.
part three: comparison och sverige. well this is the first place i've seen a one legged pigeon. i still always associate pigeons with the godfather films - shades of watching tiny toons as a child. they do have a similar demeanor. the cooing can be a wheezing marlon brando - not too far of a reference to make. its so dirty here. warm, but smelly. i can't remember the last time i sat in the sun and felt hot. almost uncomfortable - but a good uncomfortable. i like being hot. oklahoma julys - budweiser by a cool brown lake.
life, london, this moment in june...

here i sit,
lost and lonely.
here i sit,
still and comely.
i wonder what i'm here to do
i wonder what i'll be
i wonder if there's good times ahead
i wonder what's happened to me.
lost and lonely.

a day wraught with indecision
in which one thing has become abundantly clear. i should not be allowed to give myself hair trims. ow you guys would laugh so hard if you could see my bangs right now, but you can't, and you never will! so there. i made an appointment with sarah tomorrow at 3:45. she will fix them before i make an appearance with the frenchies.
i spent two hours laboring over the merits of buying new shoes. and a new bag. and i considered the purchase of a new sweater, but after being consumed with yess and nos and yess and nos all damn morning long i said fuck it, and i came home and went to sleep.
i bought new headphones, and they don't work. so i think i need a new discman. and mine has such character! what a shame she must be retired.
it's 5pm and here is what i have eaten today:
two glasses of cherry koolaid.
twenty little crackers spread with cheese.
two pieces of mint chocolate.
food is being replaced with cigarettes.
ow.

anya: when you're established and have a good job with a steady source of income, what will be the first nice thing you buy?
me: a grand marimba.
anya: what's a marimba?
if i had a dime for every time i've heard that phrase... but then she told me that i reminded her of joni mitchell, and all was redeemed. we cooked pad thai and improvised on strawberry shortcake (vanilla ice cream in place of whipped cream).
strumming and feeling like writing a song, but lacking in inspiration. the sounds floating through the ceiling are giving me writer's block. i'll spare you all the gory details. ugh. so instead i will return to working on my paper, and pray the realm of sleep is soon forthcoming...
p.s. the new album has arrived! read on...

i think i am getting frustrated with myself. i worry constantly about what other people are thinking of me. that's why i had/have to stop writing, because i was only putting up what i think people wanted to see, or things that would manipulate the way people see me. and either way i'm going to end up looking like a freak. see that right there, i'm again thinking of how i will "look." you're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't. blarg.
so we're going to keep it simple. i practiced guitar earlier. i ROCKED out on my blues chords, and ran some scales into the ground. i even worked over the blues solo i learned before i left. and then i took a lovely shower. sometimes showerheads are much better then boys, and i giggle to think what the downstairs neighbors thought of all that noise. that makes me smile. smiling is good!
tomorrow at 10am Sweden time i will be finished with my project, and have a lovely weekend to look forward to. i still have quinci's stationwagon, and there was a big store off the highway near Goteborg that had a large old-school Nintendo logo on the side. that could merit some exploration. and of course my sojourn next week, and i also signed up for an overnight cruise to Oslo in early April. We get to see the sun set over the fjords!
fjords fjords fjords.

the retirement bug is biting. so perhaps i will take a break from things, and return to the old fashioned pen & paper journaling. i feel like i'm trying to quit smoking. like i should cut back slowly instead of doing the cold turkey. we'll give it a week and see how i'm feeling. stay well.

the sun is staying up until 6pm. this makes me smile.
on inspiration from letter writing, here is a list of things they don't have here.
garbage disposals (you scoop the goop into the trash instead)
air conditioners (as if they'd need then, snicker)
bathtubs (because they're all so damn uptight)
ranch dressing (they prefer flavorless food)
phone telemarketers (thank god!)
junk mail
criminals
here is things they do have:
public transport (that only run until midnight on weekdays, grumble grumble)
fresh bread every day
clean air
pretty buildings
really expensive movie theatres
tosca pagar cookies (i'll bring some home. best damn cookies on the planet)
i wonder what swedes would think of krispy kreme? they don't sell donuts here that i know of. probably wrinkle their skinny noses in disgust, and go eat some raw lettuce.
eww.

a reading from the book of kate, to the amy richardson. chapter two, verse three.
Dear Amy,
[...] I hope life in Norman is treating you well. From what I've heard it's not too shabby. Basketball team is kicking some ass, and the weather is nice. So you may be bored.. everyone seems to be bored.. but be glad you're in a familiar place. That is something I always took advantage of, and now I wish I had it back again. Everything here is foreign to me. (and i'm in a foreign country, imagine that!)
Tonight I went and saw Vanilla Sky. I got out about 9pm, and went to catch the bus home. And I almost started bawling on the bus.. it was the strangest sensation. Everyone around me was laughing and talking, and I just felt so out of place. I have many isolated moments here. Happy and overwhelmed, and glad to be here, and then the next day, devastatingly homesick and sad. I think I just really miss seeing familiar faces. Waiting for the bus tonight I was thinking how I wouldn't see a single friend for another two months.. and it just crushed me. I just miss my mom. My mom's face. Who would have thought I would ever miss my mom's face? Something I used to see every day of my life. Oh it's a horrible feeling. I'm sure you can understand, you've been in my shoes before. I'm really scared that I'll never make it home.. like my plane will crash or something. Someone I love will die before I get back. Silly shit like that, it's so annoying. And hard not to let it consume all my thoughts.
But there are wonderful times to! Sometimes just walking in the city, I take in a deep breath and see all the people, and smell the food, and laugh at a little kid doing something silly... and I'm glad to be here. Glad to be living this life. I get to see so many things that most people never see. And for that I am truly thankful, but I just wish that there was someone for me to share it with when I come home each night.
Well anyways, I feel better after having told someone that. Thanks for thinking of me in that forward, and I hope you'll write back if you get the time.
Always,

Last night I experienced my first full-scale Swedish dinner party. 8 swedes and 2 girls from Oklahoma. Quite a combination. No swedish food per say, but at Anders apartment, surrounded by IKEA furniture, and people all speaking swedish. We listened to Janis Joplin and Crosby,Stills, and Nash. It was lovely! I asked Anders if he enjoyed this type of music, and he turned a little red, and with an air of guitly admitance told me that he simply downloaded everything labeled as "classic rock" and burned it to a CD. Ah but either way it was some great music. The Stones, Aerosmith, Creedence Clearwater. It rocked.
We ate swedish-mexican food, which means lots of cucumber and corn mixed in with tortillas and cheese and just a TOUCH of meat. They spoke predominantly swedish during the entire evening. My god is that strange to be a part of! You feel like you're very full as you listen. Overwhelmed. You sit flopped back in your chair, and try to follow the conversation. It's like a weight on your chest. Surrounding by chattering and laughing and the jokes... you just smoke your cigarette and drink your coke, and you can't help smiling when they all break into laughter at some unknown joke.. then one of the turns to you when they see you smile and says "oh yes! did you understand? wonderful!" and you didn't, so you just kind of smile in response, and soon they forget and slip back into their conversation... it's such a musical language. Wonderful to listen to. And funny how flustered they get when they catch your eye and realize you don't understand! Luckily for me, it doesn't bother me too much. I just like to listen.
And now the sun is streaming down, and I'm nummily full of cornflakes with banana slices. They had NHL updates on the BBC, blogger is working again, now if I could just have talked to Aaron it would be an absolutely PERFECT day. Lovely Saturday afternoon... my exam is done... nothing to do but edit some photographs, and go with Jay tonight to dance to drum 'n bass. And i'm listening to Beethoven's piano concerto no. 2. Life doesn't get much better then this! But wouldn't it be lovely if someone was here to share it all with me.

raindrops keep fallin' on my head
so much in fact, that i am enduced into making obscene gestures at passing volvos. i steped off the bus today, into a large squishy puddle of mud. this forced me to quickly move to the street, and cross behind the bus, just like you're supposed to, and just like i do every day when i get home, but for some reason, a driver passing in his volvo felt the urge to continue propelling along and swerve AROUND the stopped bus. a very odd phenomenon, people here always yield to pedestrians. well regardless let's just say that the bird is an international sign for "fuck off," and is especially effective when flashed from under the guise of a salmon pink umbrella. the people waiting at the stop just over the road all gaped in amazement. it was pretty fun. i walked the rest of the way home with a smug little grin on my face.
swedes have a thing for mangos
including, but not limited to, mango chutney. who woulda though? and on a baked potato? with cold chicken and cold strips of bacon? my oh my. this was my lunch selection today at Ebba's, where I dined with two fellow okie girls, Casey and Anya. it was pretty tasty. I just miss places where they have salt and pepper shakers at every table, and people don't always give you dirty looks...
jenny and i discussed this at length the other day. swedish women know dirty looks. they have it down to an exactly science. i'd even go so far as to say it's an art form. and we tried to pinpoint their exact cause.. and could figure it is nothing less then our different appearance. when compared to swedish women. most swedish women look very similar, or are easily catagorized (by each other, not by us) into neat little 'catagories' that dictate their style of dress and general attitude. neither jenny nor myself fit into any of these catagories so far as we can tell, so we get nasty looks from the lot of them. what is it with women and nasty looks? i have difficulty seeing how i, a rather awkward-looking tall red-haired girl, usually with running mascara, mussy hair, wrinkled jeans, and dirtied sneakers, could pose a threat to them, in their carefully calculated fashion glory. swedish women are amazing dressers. they always appear so clean and well put together. even the "emo" girls look just out of some alterna-page of last month's vogue. it boggles the mind. well, regardless, jenny and i are tired of the nasty looks. next time i'm going to hit them back with a big phoney starry smile. that'll teach 'em. they're all terrified of confrontation, it'd be fun to make them squirm.
after all, how dangerous can one goofy girl from oklahoma really be?

when you search for "galaxy 500" on google, the results are an even split between the band (galaxie 500) and the car (ford galaxy 500). this made me giggle. first song i ever learned to play is by galaxy 500. and the band they spawned, luna, is played a few shows in texas this summer. dallas here i come.
bought my ticket for the white stripes show today... freakin' $26! they better be pretty damn good. that is as much as i paid for spiritualized! but on good authority (a sarmiento, plus some internet girl from minnesota) they play a good live show. now if i could just find someone to go with me, it'd be guaranteed to be fun times all around.
other shows forthcoming... godspeed you black emperor on the 3rd of april. day after i get back from france :) hooray!
for the normanites: more pistol arrows news. the boys have updated their march schedule, lots of shows to go to! go! dance! be merry! see here for dates/times/locations. there is even a gig in tulsa, surprise surprise. one or so of those norman dates should be the official cd release shindig.. perhaps the show on the 16th? who knows.

too much to tell.
this week i have:
been to the movies
heard celtic music performed live ( accordians + guitar + fiddles + drums + random wind instruments )
it was almost as good as a pistol arrows show. almost.
talked to my brother on the phone
danced to funny electronika in a student club
talked to and subsequently gotten the number of a very very cute swedish boy.
his name is mattias.
mah-tee-as.
oh yes.
thank you sir, may i have another?
cooked thai food
shopped in copenhagen
witnessed a bar fight
practiced my french (j'etudie commerce! je vais allez a la lyon, dans trois semaine!)
attended a church service in an awesome gothic cathedral (circa 1275, just like marco polo in the bill and ted movie!)
walked the cobbled streets
drank multiple cups of coffee
read books
studied consumer behavior
washed clothes
played guitar (new song in the works. we're thinking F to C to A minor... to E? then repeat? i haven't decided)
dreamt about being in Florida
seen a swedish punk show
listened to jenny snore.
it's been busy and fun. and a bit shaky. i feel like i have new legs, and i'm just learning to walk again. settling in i suppose... they have a beautiful city park here. i rode my bicycle through it yesterday afternoon on the way to the merjeriet and i was very impressed. it will be so beautiful in the springtime.
ah, springtime.
one parting piece of advice... and i may be misquoting... "bloom where you're planted."
truer words were never spoken.
